Retro Hi-Tops are back

Hot on the heels ( ) of yesterday’s footwear trend comes another big one for men’s fashion footwear this season. It seems that Retro Hi-Tops are back and looking as good as they ever have. I am not talking about the thin canvas Converse or Superga trainers right now, but the thick, full bodied, real men’s versions that were rocked back in the 90’s. More and more of the fashion conscious men I know are really into these right now, and I think it is a great look for any casual outfit.

I remember the days of me rolling round in my first pair of Reebok pumps, and later my Nike Air Force One’s. This is the type of trainer we are going to throwback to – something with a bit more substance and shape to them. The thicker versions are perfect for this season’s military or worker wear (check shirts etc.) looks and I think they add a lot of balance to outfits that incorporate skinny or slim fit jeans.

Remember you don’t necessarily have to go completely retro to get into the trend, you are just looking for something more substantial – a bit like a military or worker leather boot would be. Some people have understated style and so will be looking for classic colours as well. A mix would be great if you have the funds.

This time you will ideally look for retro styling – bold colour ways, old school classic trainer shapes, traditional brands like Nike/Adidas and even metallic materials. These will look great with any casual outfit and add some flair to it. You can wear them with worker/comfort jeans in order to keep width to the bottom half of your outfits or tuck your skinny jeans into them and leave them undone in order to balance out your bottom half.

In the end nearly everyone I know loves to buy a great pair of trainers, so get on board and add some retro styling to what is fast becoming this season’s must have casual shoe! Here are some of the best around right now.

Men’s Retro Hi-Tops
Urban Outfitters
Usually stock the more funky collection pieces from each brand so it’s a good place to start. Not many bright colour ways at the moment but some good examples of thicker hi-tops that would look great in your wardrobe this season.

Schuh
These have a ridiculous amount of styles and versions in at the moment. Some great styles from Nike, Adidas, Puma and Converse make the cut, but you really need to spend some time taking a look through because there are so so many and I tried to just do a good range of styles and colour ways below.

Oki-Ni High Fashion and Premium Designer Examples
High fashion has not left the trend behind either, check out some of the extraordinary versions below from Adidas, Clae, McQ, Veja and RAF Simons. These either feature extravagant cuts, premium suede/leather construction or just amazing colour combinations. These are for the real keen trainer investor.

Premium Versions
These premium designer versions are by Lavin, Goliath, Alexander McQueen, Creative Recreation and D&G. They are typically made with premium leather and the construction to the highest quality. True investment footwear that are top of the range – perfect for multiple seasons and years worth of use.
